The Forest Preserve District is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners, which translates the open-space needs of county residents into ordinances designed to protect and enhance natural areas and support general operations it holds lands containing forests, prairies, wetlands, and associated plant communities or lands capable of being restored to such natural conditions for the purpose of protecting and preserving the flora, fauna and scenic beauty for the education, pleasure and recreation of its citizens

About these offices
The County Legislature or Executive Board is the governing body of the county and exercises broad policy-making authority. The Board is charged with implementing policy and overseeing the county budget process and allocation.
The County Board is the elected body that sets county policy, ordinances and budget appropriations for programs. Every ten years Illinois statute requires one election to fill all Board positions and staggering occurs through a random drawing for two or four year terms. Chairmen are elected by the board and conduct meetings, hold meetings at prescribed times, and publish a report of each meeting
The Clerk is responsible for the conduct of all elections. The Clerk is the official record keeper for all births, deaths, and marriages. The Clerk records the minutes of all County Board meetings. The Clerk's office processes all accounts payable for the county. In addition, the county payroll is processed in the Clerk's office.
The Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Circuit Court, Director of Safety and the Administrator of the County Jail. Main functions include: Provide basic police services to the unincorporated areas of the county. Maintain a complete record of all traffic accidents, arrest, investigations and complaints. Maintain security in the Courtrooms and Custodian of the Courthouse.
Treasurer receives and safely keeps the revenues and other public monies of the County, collects property taxes, distributes the monies collected to the proper recipients, invests surplus funds, pays the county's bills as directed by the Adams County Board, co-signature authorization on county checks, Store and disseminate tax records
The County Auditor is the chief accountant for the county. County Auditor duties include preparing and administering accounting records for county funds, overseeing audits of county departments, and regulating the budget.
The County Court Clerk is responsible for maintaining court records, authenticating court orders and judgements, and administering oaths to witnesses and jurors.
The County Coroner or Medical Examiner is responsible for inquiring into the cause and manner of death of a citizen in their jurisdiction. The County Coroner or Medical Examiner is also responsible for completing test results, documenting evidence, completing autopsies, and providing testimonies.
