About this position
The 50 Aldermen are legislators and members of the City Council who serve a four-year term to represent the residents of their ward. They often have two offices; one in City Hall and the other in their wards.
By custom, an alderman is a source of information and intermediary on behalf of their constituency about city functions and services within the ward. Currently each alderman is allocated about $1.5 million discretionary funds for projects in their ward.
Eligibility requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must be a registered voter
- Must be a resident of the district
- Candidate must be a qualified elector of the municipality and have 1 year of residency in the municipality preceding the election. Must not be in arrears in payment of tax or other indebtedness due to the municipality. Must not have been convicted of an infamous crime, bribery, perjury or other felony.
