About this position

The constitutional county courts have original jurisdiction over all criminal cases involving Class A and Class B misdemeanors, which are the more serious minor offenses. These courts usually have appellate jurisdiction in cases appealed from justice of the peace and municipal courts, except in counties where county courts at law have been established.

Eligibility requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a registered voter
  • Must be a resident of the district
  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen, a Texas resident for at least 1 year, a resident of the county for at least 6 months, registered to vote in the county, and at least 18 years old.

Filing fee is $750 if county has a population of less than 200,000, otherwise filing fee is $1,250; signature requirement is 0. Alternatively, filing fee is 0, signature requirement is the lesser of 2% of registered voters or 500 signatures.
